In today's world, we are so dependent on the internet. What will happen if it vanishes one fine day? Yes, you heard it right internet disappear but mankind remains.
Like the electricity gone at your house, the internet will also disappear and will never turn on. It will be not only at your place, across the world this thing happens. I know imagining this could be hard but why not hypothetically?
In these scenarios what you will miss the most. Like you, I will also go crazy and mentioned below are the list which I believe will be the most impacted areas.
· VOIP - The cheap call from one country to another country across the globe will no longer possible. We will be back to the costliest era of Telephone bills for connecting to someone in different state or country. Although not only voice the video calling will also be missed by most long-distance couples, parents, and friends. To me, this will be the blow to the advancement of technology.
· Google Search - This is something many of us will be missed who use Google for almost everything. If you stuck while coding - Google. You faced integration challenges - Google, you want to know the meaning of a word - Google. I even know peoples who type “google.com” on the google search bar as they are so addicted to using Google that they forgot that damn address bar in a browser exists. Ask a software developer to imagine a world without google search he might say “Duck Duck Go” but in this scenario, that will also not work.
· YouTube - I must list the most used one first, then listed below are some other ones. The entertainment and education which is mostly free at YouTube will be missed the most by me and I am sure most of you. Although my preference for paid ones is listed below, you can always defer and add some of them to the list.
· Netflix/Amazon Prime/Udemy/Coursera - I just listed the one I use or used, there are many on entertainment and education categories which could be favorite for others. Moral of the story, you need to go back to respective college or library for gaining knowledge and off-course wait for the TV channel to showcase your favorite movie because theater will only showcase latest releases with very few exceptions.
· Social Networking - Whats-app will be on my top missing list compared to Facebook but the way these apps had revived the social connectivity of human beings. I am sure after the internet is dead your living soul can’t rest in peace. Just add Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to this list and pain will only increase.
· Email - If this would have happened 15 years back, this would have been listed as my first but somehow will be happy to not receive many irritating emails like the winning of the 10-million-dollar lottery but would be sad to lose one of the best ways to instant communication within or outside the network.
· Porn - The internet revived this industry and easy access is something that will be missed by many majorities of peoples. Don't worry the market of CD, DVD, and BlueRay will be there to make you feel no casualty happened in this arena.
· Payment Gateways - All your cards and mobile wallets depend on the internet so your cashless days will be over. You need to carry cash for every transaction. This will revive the pickpocket market which is currently facing recession.
· Smart Phones – Yes, I will miss my iPhone, you will also miss your smartphones. Why? They are called smart because they can use the internet to execute the desired applications. Otherwise old phones can call and cameras can take pictures for quite some time now.
Imagine a scenario where you can’t book a cab and restaurant. You can’t do anything that listed above. You can’t use google map and you can’t upload your contents or contacts to the cloud. Then what your smartphone can do apart from calling someone? Take a selfie? Yes, you still can take selfies in so many megapixels, but you can’t upload those pictures to receive an affirmation, comments or like from your social network.
So, will you still use this feature of your phone that often? In this situation, your Smart Phone capabilities will not be much better than old Nokia 3310 (Image is shown below). At least it will cover better call quality if you are living in any South Asian region.
All not lost here, there will be some benefits too, your kid will be playing actual sports in place of virtual. You might connect with your parents or friend via phone than WhatsApp.
Something will not change, the usage of your phone as a watch will continue. You can keep those irritating tunes as your caller tune or hello tune which soothe your ear. You can still play existing games on your mobile, if not with others.
You might still able to check your calorie burnt, unfortunately, you must keep it to yourself or call a friend to tell that because you can’t share them on Twitter or Facebook. So smart vs non-smart phone will still exist with very less benefit.
Loss of internet will also impact in terms of sharing your talent (Poem, stories or articles) to the world instantly but that will not stop you to write and get better and compete to get published someday. Same will be the case for any Arts and other creative skills too.
Without the Internet, our life might be like what it was 30 years back (I believe 1988 life will be like 2018, in this scenario), maybe bit better with other advancements in technologies minus IoT.
Remember, we as a human being had seen so many ups and downs since ages and survived so many catastrophes so we will survive this one too and so also you, eventually.
